My next book, Breaking Midnight: A True Story, goes on sale Jan. 17th. This is the story of my father's life as a good cop who broke bad, a Miami undercover narcotics agent who became a drug smuggler. But it is so much more than that.
I wrote the book after numerous lengthy interviews conducted with my dad. Asking to hear his story, then writing it and sharing it with him, finally allowed us to heal our relationship. As Dad read early drafts, he opened up more, provided additional information and I wrote more chapters. Our work on this book provided the space for him to finally say he didn't feel good about what he'd done to our family, and allowed me to say that I forgave him—a long time ago.
