This weekend I found myself on Google Maps at the location where my father made a huge heroin bust in the 70's. The house wasn't even there any more, it was a big box store, but then I went down this rabbit trail about the man he arrested, and the street value of eight pounds of heroin back then and on and on. About 30 minutes later, I realized none of this contributed anything to the story I was working on.
That's how my writing has been all month. Not really a writer's block more of a writer's slog. It takes me an hour of writing to get the juices flowing and then I get so easily distracted by the merest thought of needing more information about some topic on which I'm writing (aka, "Let me do a quick web search on that.").
So exasperating! I'm motivated and have plenty to write about but just can't stay focused. Normally when I carve out precious writing time, I'm driven. I've got a full-time job and two teens, I don't have time for this crap!
Anyone else ever get into a slog like this? If so, I value any tips or advice you have.
